Car fuses: do you know which ones are the safest?

Every electrical circuit, including in a vehicle, is exposed to sudden surges in current and voltage. Various types of car fuses allow you to protect installations by interrupting circuits in the event of an emergency. We advise you which fuses will be the best and what to consider when choosing.

What are car fuses?

Car fuses are small but very important elements in the electrical system of every car. They are mounted in a special socket, creating an extensive security net. Their production mainly uses copper, aluminum, zinc, silver, and various alloys of these metals. Most often, they consist of two legs connected with wire, colored or transparent insulation and an amperage marking (symbol A).

The main function of car fuses is to protect individual electrical circuits in the vehicle. A car fuse is a kind of blockage - if the current increases too much, it will take on the increased charge, it will burn out, and the excess energy caused by the fault will not reach the device. As a result, the entire circuit will be disabled and its components will be protected against permanent damage.

If an electrical device in your car stops working, it means that the power supply has been cut off, causing it to lose power and the fuse will need to be replaced. Moreover, each vehicle also has the so-called main fuse, which is able to completely cut off the power in the event of a serious failure.

Why are car fuses important?

Car fuses are so important because they protect not only small electrical devices such as lights, radio, horn, wipers or heating, but also complex and extensive components without which the vehicle's operation would be impossible. Thanks to them, the brake pump, alternator, ignition coils and on-board computer, among others, will be safe.

The task of these small plates is to protect the installation and its individual receivers against damage and destruction in the event of a sudden increase in current intensity. This is very important because if the electrical circuit is significantly overloaded, it may cause failure, short circuit or even ignition, which will result in a fire .

Car fuses - types

Fuses differ primarily depending on their maximum voltage and current. Older vehicles often used cylindrical plastic or glass tubular fuses, which can sometimes also be found in new cars, including electric ones. However, their role is very limited (they are used, for example, in a cigarette lighter plug).

For a long time, blade fuses, divided into several sizes, have been found in car electrical installations.

  • Standard and mini - with a maximum intensity of up to 25A, are usually used to protect circuits with low intensity, primarily inside the vehicle.
  • Maxi - whose maximum intensity is 60A, they are most often used in the engine compartment, close to the battery, i.e. where the circuits are more loaded.

What does the color of the fuses mean?

Most often , different types of car fuses have a colored housing , which is not accidental. Thanks to it, you can easily determine the current assigned to a given color, which is useful when replacing an element. What colors are the fuses?

  • Gray - 2A
  • Purple - 3A (or 100A for maxi fuses)
  • Light brown/beige - 5A
  • Dark brown - 7.5A (or 70A for maxi size fuses)
  • Red - 10 (or 50A for maxi size fuses)
  • Blue - 15 (or 60A for maxi size fuses)
  • Yellow - 20 or 25A
  • White - 25A (or 80A for maxi fuses)
  • Green - 30A
  • Orange - 40A

How to choose the best car fuses?

To choose the right fuses tailored to the needs of the installation and a specific car, you must first take into account the current intensity and voltage. When replacing a fuse, its color will be helpful, as it will make it easier to determine the parameters. If there is no colored casing, you can refer to the marking on it. It is important to never select a value higher than the maximum recommended for a given system. Otherwise, serious failure or complete damage to the circuit may occur.

You can also read your vehicle's owner's manual before selecting a fuse. It contains data on parameters, types and sizes of fuses for individual circuits.

Quality is also important. It is worth buying this type of elements from proven sellers who have experience in the industry. It is best if the fuses are original or high-quality replacements that guarantee reliability.
