Car fuses: do you know which ones are the safest?

Every electrical circuit, including those in a vehicle, is exposed to sudden surges in current and voltage. Different types of car fuses allow you to protect installations by breaking circuits in case of danger. We advise you which fuses will be the best and what to consider when choosing them.

What are car fuses?

Car fuses are small but very important components in the electrical system of every car. They are mounted in a special socket, creating an extensive safety net. Their production mainly uses copper, aluminum, zinc, silver, as well as various alloys of these metals. Most often, they consist of two legs connected by a wire, colored or transparent insulation and an amperage marking (symbol A).

The main function of car fuses is to protect individual electrical circuits. in the vehicle. A car fuse is a kind of lock - If the current intensity increases excessively, it will take on the increased charge, burn out, and the excess energy caused by the fault will not reach the device. As a result, the entire circuit will be switched off and its components will be protected from permanent damage.

If any electrical device in your car stops working, it means that the power supply has been cut off and as a result, no electricity is reaching it and the fuse will need to be replaced. Moreover, each vehicle also has the so-called main fuse, which in the event of a serious failure is able to completely cut off the power supply.

Why are car fuses important?

Car fuses are so important because they protect not only small electrical devices such as lights, radio, horn, wipers or heating, but also complex and extensive components without which the vehicle would not be able to operate. Thanks to them, the brake pump, alternator, ignition coils and on-board computer will be safe, among others.

The purpose of these small boards is to protect the installation and its individual receivers from damage and destruction in the event of a sudden increase in current intensity. This is very important because in a situation where when an electrical circuit is significantly overloaded, it may cause a failure, short circuit or even ignition, which will result in a fire .

Car fuses - types

Fuses differ from each other primarily depending on their maximum voltage and current. Older vehicles often used cylindrical plastic or glass tube fuses, which can sometimes be found in newer cars, including electric cars. Their role, however, is very limited (they are used, for example, in the cigarette lighter plug).

For a long time, automotive electrical installations have primarily been equipped with blade fuses, divided into several sizes.

  • Standard and mini - with a maximum current of up to 25A, are usually used to protect low-current circuits, primarily inside the vehicle.
  • Maxi - whose maximum current is 60A, they are most often used in the engine compartment, close to the battery, i.e. where the circuits are more loaded.

What does the color of the fuses mean?

Most often different types of car fuses have colored casings , which is not accidental. Thanks to this, you can easily determine the current intensity assigned to a given color, which is useful when replacing an element. What fuse colors do we distinguish?

  • Gray - 2A
  • Violet - 3A (or 100A for maxi size fuses)
  • Light brown/beige - 5A
  • Dark brown - 7.5A (or 70A for maxi fuses)
  • Red - 10 (or 50A for maxi fuses)
  • Blue - 15 (or 60A for maxi fuses)
  • Yellow - 20 or 25A
  • White - 25A (or 80A for maxi size fuses)
  • Green - 30A
  • Orange - 40A

How to choose the best car fuses?

To select the appropriate fuses for the installation and specific car, you must first take into account the current intensity and voltage. When replacing a fuse, its color will be helpful, as it will make it easier to identify its parameters. If there is no colored casing, you can follow the marking on it. It is important to never select a value higher than the maximum recommended for your system. Otherwise, it may result in serious failure or complete damage to the circuit.

You can also read your vehicle's manual before selecting a fuse. It contains data on the parameters, types, and sizes of fuses for individual circuits.

Quality is also important. It is worth buying this type of items from trusted sellers who have experience in the industry. It is best if the fuses are original or high-quality replacements that guarantee reliability.
